Acer
Today.... September 24th, 2004I purchased an Acer notebook a while back. I purchased it from Simply Computing This notebook is a beast. It has an AMD 2400+ MP processor, 512MB of 333Mhz DDR, a DVD-RW, wireless builtin and all the extras. It cost me a fortune (for those in South Africa, a third of what I made on the sale of my car).
Since then I have had non stop problems. I have had 3 keyboard replacements due to the “B” key malfunctioning. I have also had to send it in to fix the fan and DVD-RW after one keyboard replacement as they made horrible noises. And then I did a very me thing. I stood on my laptop and cracked the screen.
This has now been replaced, but at a horrendous cost. Again Acer to the rescue, one week for a quote, send the quote, wait a week, get told still waiting for the quote, send quote again, wait a week and then get it fixed.
Acer are the worst service level providers I have ever met. I even wrote a letter of complaint that received an apology from them. A written apology. Hahaha. At least now I have someone to complain to directly!
Enough ranting for now though. Grant and I installed a small Gentoo box in one of our cupboards. This little thing serves as a fileserver and torrent downloader. The only problem is that it is slow as hell. And it runs incredibly hot as there is now place for the heat to go.
No requests from Free Gmail accounts yet. Cmon I have invites!!!

Bah Acer’s bad service is NOTHING!!
Try getting an adsl connection through Optus!!
I sign up through one of their retail contractors (for no extra cost) because they do electricity, phone and internet for me so it “saves” a lot of trouble.
All seems to be going well. or is it??
Optus tells me they have connected my phone line. Phone doesnt appear to be working, despite them telling me over and over that it is. dunno.. maybe the lack of dial tone was the clue..
They send some dude around to my place after me ranting and raving at them for a week and a half. he shows up at 7am on a saturday after I got drunk the night before and slept at 3.
He tells me that the guy who did it before put the wires in the wrong way round, and for the wrong phone number nogal. he fixes it. now all I need is my adsl modem. “It will be arriving within the next 5 days” they tell me. and so I wait.. and wait.. and wait..
I call them up, they tell me to wait..
I get sick of waiting, call them up and start shouting! they tell me the order was put through for a completely wrong address and phone number (failed to mention this before despite them asking for my address and phone number for identification purposes everytime I called), and it’ll take another week to start the order again. I think I heard something snapping in my brain at this point. I’ve never screamed at someone like that. (keep in mind this is my new apartment. no dialup ‘cos my modem is fucked and no other contact with the rest of the world ‘cos I had quite a lot of time off work)
They promise to get it to me in the next 2 days, but the line wont work ‘cos it hasnt been enabled.
I got the modem yesterday, took it home and FINALLY it works, even though they promised me it wont. it took 3 and a half weeks for all this to happen, and it wasnt even SUPPOSED to be working until next tuesday! now I am just praying that they arent sending someone out to “connect” it and screw it all up again.

[…] I have had many problems with my laptop. It just hit it’s two year birthday and decided to celebrate by cracking it’s case. Now, whenever pressure is put onto the case, the crack allows some components of the laptop to touch which then shorts out the board and causes the laptop to turn off. […]
