iPodder.org Node Editing
IT Chapters, Podcasting December 13th, 2005Warning: Rant Alert
iPodder.org. The starting point for all podcast lists. The “Ultimate” directory of all things podcast. Lists and lists all in pretty OPML files all nicely linked to editors’ servers to reduce load. Seems like a paradise for podcasters to make sure more listeners come their way. But there is trouble in paradise and I have had enough.
I currently manage 3 nodes. Hacking, Games and the mother of all nodes, Technology. Lets go through the steps that podcasters must take to get listed:
- The podcaster fills in the form on the iPodder.org site and submit it
- I then receive an email from the site stating the URL of the podcast (not neccesarily the RSS feed), a description and a contact email address
- I then take this email, validate the feed
- Check that it is a good enough podcast for the node
- Open up a copy of your OPML file
- Add the entry into the file
- Upload to your own server
- Rinse and Repeat
Thats right, you are the person paying for the bandwidth. iPodder.org takes the credit for a great directory when its your servers that are doing the grunt work. This I don’t mind as I feel part of a community keeping a great service up and running.
So, I start getting really busy at work. I can’t spend as much time on the directory as I would like and the requests are starting to pile up. I send out an email out to the Gaming nodes’ podcasters asking if anyone would like to take the job as editor. Once we setup the OPML file on the new editor’s server, we now have to change the original OPML file to reflect the change. Who controls this? Adam Curry. Does he answer emails requesting the change? No. Is there any other way of changing the URLs? No, not a single one.
I remember a great little podcast done by Adam saying how wonderful iPodder.org editors are. “Thanks for all your hard work” was what came out of the podcast. “Tools are coming” was another comment. Where are they? I have put HOURS into the directory keeping upset podcasters happy, modifying URLs for their RSS feeds, helping with validation and even CREATION of RSS feeds just so the directory works well. iTunes uses this directory for their podcasts to some degree. Winamp’s podcast support uses the iPodder.org directory greatly. A large amount of other directories are using the original OPML file. I even tried to find the podcast done by Adam regarding the directory and it’s editors as discussed above but the website that held the podcast (http://podshow.com/editors/) is down. Strange that. Do I feel like its not important anymore?
So this is where I am. Frustrated, feeling used and haven’t heard a single word in ages. This is the turning point and I give up. I can’t contact anyone to hand over my feeds and I feel that its pointless to be a slave to a money-making business. So as of today, the Technology, Gaming and Hacking nodes will no longer be updated. The Technology node, one of the most active nodes with submissions constantly coming in, is really going to hurt. I apologise in advance to anyone podcaster or listener affected by this change.
Being the editor of one of the larger nodes in the directory, I feel like this should have some effect. I hope anyone reading this can get behind me and force to issue forward. Please help me to bring the directory up in the priorities and give us, the editors the tools and support we need. Adam, if you are reading this, please put some word out. Answer my emails, let us know what is happening with the directory. I have no problem that this has turned into a business for Adam. That is life. However, I refuse, point blank, to work on this if there is no benefit for me and my fellow editors if this is no a commercial venture.
Is it important anymore?
***UPDATE****
I have the DSC from March 15 2003 where the editors are discussed a little. Does anyone still have the original and only podshow editor’s podcast?

A few months back you asked for a Gaming podcaster to step forward to take over the node, and I offered to help out. Seeing how difficult it is to maintain OPML feeds I’m glad that I wasn’t selected to take over the feed. There should be a centralized server hosting the OPML files and accepting applications for new podcasts wishing to be added. I don’t get why the community hasn’t jumped at creating such a thing yet. I’m glad to see your post about this problem because you don’t hear about node editing much, you just assume that the inner workings of podcast listings are much simpler and semi-automatic.

i know that you cant change the pointer and so you cant pass on the job but if you are looking fore someone to take over a node i can help with that. I will do my best to help you get adams attention but i don’t know if that will help

It definitely sounds like the site is being neglected. I applied for entry into the directory, and haven’t seen my podcast up. I guess I know why, now. Sorry to see that such a site is ignoring it’s editors and what is needed to keep it in good shape. I can’t see you as being to blame for the condition the areas you manage will degrade into seeing as you have done as much as you can.

i have been E-mailiing adam for 3 months trying to ad a ‘Video Podcast’ node but he just isn’t taking care of the site. If he doesn’t have time maybe he could appoint someone to take care the site .

How can we get behind you if the guy can’t be contacted? I don’t mean to be rude - that’s a serious question.
If the guy doesn’t respond, his site is dead. Period. You’re just propping him up, like a marionette. That doesn’t do anyone a favor.
As for it being money making - where is he making money? I don’t see any ads or acknowledgement of sponsorship. I ask this because I’m curious, not because I doubt your statement.
I know that you’ve been having issues for quite a while, as they delayed my addition to the directory (although I finally got added). Sorry that you’re having a rough time of it.
Sites like this ipodder thing are easy to make - but no one is going to make another one, because the momentum is behind these other directories. So, if ipodder dies as a result, it’ll just mean that podcast.net or something else will just soak in the extra traffic. If you don’t think that’d be true… Well, heck - I’d make an ipodder clone in a day! (with good tools for editors, of course!)
In fact, let me know if you think this would be worth my time. There’s absolutely nothing special about ipodder’s structure - other than “people go there, so it’s popular, so people go there, which makes it more popular, which gets other people to go there”…

I’m actually running the gaming opml now. Ray passed the torch to me a month ago. It did take him some time to get Adam to respond to his emails.
I guess if you’re not happy, just quit doing it. Adam will either rise to the occasion and deal with the issues, or something else will become the master list. Obviously some of the lists have grown beyond the ability of a part-time guy to screen and manage. I suspect that it’ll only get more busy in the months to come.

Oh. So, if the changes in ownership (of editor duties) are happening as expected, er… Well, I guess I don’t understand the issue at all.

PS - I hear that www.stageselect.com is the best site on the planet. But don’t take my word for it.

Hi Kevin
Thanks for popping in. I didn’t even realise that the change had happened on ipodder. I initially sent a request to Adam in October. Its taken this long to happen and I didn’t even know about it because there was never any communication my way. At least a node can stay up.
Chris, I am extremely happy that this has happened. My major gripe is that there seems to be effort placed in the directory. And yes there is a business venture. podshow.com, the podsafe music network is there in the end as a business venture. With which I have no problem. But its not fair to just say: “Here, do the dirty work for me, keeping a great directory up and I’ll leverage it to my benefit.”
I’ll post an update on my thoughts later today once I have had some time to digest the comments. Work calls
Stageselect? I heard www.rjb.za.net was the best site.

I’ve been having the same problems. I recognize Adam is busy, but he really should turn over responsibility for updating the top-level OPML source to someone who can answer emails.
I also feel a big burned by the “tools are coming” line. Which turned out to not be true.
December 13th, 2005 at 3:28 pm
Good posts here. I will indeed turn the top level responsibility over to someone who has less inbound email and more time than I have. It’s not that I don’t want to make changes, I simply miss requests in email and have no way to filter them properly. Please email all requests in the meantime to adam@curry.com with OPML NODE CHANGE in the subject.
Thanks.

Podcast Directory Woes - Ray Booysen with iPodder.org
Ray Booysen who manages several nodes (hacking, games, and technology) in the iPodder.org (aka Indiepodder.org) has been having a bunch of problems and not getting anywhere. He posts his details of his woes at: http://www.rjb.za.net/archives/2005/12/13…

great post. and needed!!
I parse out the ‘indiePodder’ nodes in my OPML browser at http://readerss.com/opml
it’s always breaking stuff. and the types are all over the place. this was the reason for the OPML Alert here [ http://blog.podbat.com/2005/11/11.html#a232 ]
I’m building a system which might help eventually. keep in touch. and don’t give up!
what do you use for OPML editing? Have you tried support.opml.org ? I can help you add the type attributes required to get this singin’

Not wishing to divert the subject, but anyone out there who has video podcasts which are specifically formatted for iPod transfer, please let me know for inclusion on podguide.tv. I’m attempting to review the better ones on a site that’s easy enough for completely non-tech audiences to understand and subscribe to (I’ve shown iPodder to a few podcast-listening, non-tech friends and all I got was blank, confused stares).

I manage the “business”, “law” and “finance” directories on ipodder.org. It took over 6 months for me to get Adam to change the server for these entries. I was extremely frustrated by the lack of response by Adam and even though he eventually helped me out, I do twist him arm to get the job done and that to me is not a working system.

Let me recap: ipodder.org was initiated by Adam Curry, and ‘owned’ by everyone. Then there’s the birth of BoKu, *boingg* and the site says “Copyright 2005 - BoKu Communications”. As that’s Adam Curry+Ron Bloom=PodShow (which got millions $$ from VC’s), why they don’t pay people to maintain it? Or even make a better decision: give the directory back to the people.
If you ask me: take the offer of Dave Winer for facilitating the directory, *remove* the copyright of BoKu, and let the OPML community pick it up, build tools etc.

Thanks Adam. Great to see you’re still in here and participating. And folks, for the record, (I’m a node manager) Adam did get back to me today and did indeed change the feed URL. Thanks to Ray for getting this issue on the table!

Todd, that is all well and good, but I have to think that doing something once someone complains you ignore problems, is not an adequate long term solution. How many editors for ipodder have complained in this thread alone? How many are likely just remaining silent on the matter? The new Winamp version offers podcasts, and uses ipodder to make up it’s directory. How can the #1 audio application have a reliable list if months can go by without action when changes are needed?

Anyone having trouble with their category listings on ipodder/indiepodder.org? “My” categories (Business/Law/Finance) seem to have reverted to old OPML file locations such that my edits/updates are not appearing on indiepodder.
I put in a request for a fix to Adam with (”OPML NODE CHANGE”) in the subject. That was only about half an hour ago so I’m not bitching about responsiveness - just wondering if anyone else is having problems?
