London Office Space

IT Chapters, Quick Thought No Comments »

Following on from Om’s post, are there any cafe’s or coffee shops like this in London? I used to spend at least one day a week in Starbucks doing that and I find I am very productive in that atmosphere. I would love to start this again, but haven’t found a nice spot and the closest Starbucks is always packed and loud.

From Om:

My own experience helping to organize the WebZine conference pretty much echoed this. No office space was rented, communication was primarily through email lists and a private wiki, and meetings were held at cafes with free internet, with notes and ideas quickly disseminated to those who couldn’t attend. When a contact was needed to help out with services such as advertising, sponsorships or donations, cell phones came out and calls were made, and issues were often resolved before the meeting was even over. Even during the conference itself, local cafes served as press rooms, panel development forums and, of course, somewhere to get some lunch.

Update:

Even Ben Metcalfe is in on this topic. Have a read.

Research Work

Browsing Yahoo Search, I found a link to my research paper that I wrote for my final year. It was a paper and thesis on how to integrate visualization techniques into intrusion detection systems.

Interesting paper to write as it showed how a people digest and process information; different from the ways you would think it would happen. The research certainly wasn’t ground breaking but showed how easy it is to display information that is generally thought of in a textual way into an easy to view format. My interest in information security was sparked from the research into this project which I continue to have. I did get offered a bursary to continue the idea onto a master’s level but turned it down to get some work experience.

I have a copy of the full thesis but this is 100+ pages. If anyone is that interested, please let me know and I’ll pass it on.

Brent Park in the Autumn

This is a picture I took during the Autumn in 2005. The leaves had really started to fall and the paths were absolutely covered. I took this photo and spent a little time dding some effects. The result is a pretty spooky looking path running who knows where.

I like this photo and I hope you do too.

Gmail for Domains

Well, I could hear it coming… After seeing Javascript in Gmail that pointed to managing domains, Google have “launched” Gmail for domains. Its beta (of course ;) ) and you need to fill out a form to apply.

It looks like the form will be reviewed by a human before you get accepted. Interesting concept although Yahoo has been doing it for years (with support for 3rd party apps). I can almost hear the roar of blog posts about Google’s amazing idea and completely forgetting the forerunners like Yahoo.

Tom Coates, where are you?
