Yes, this week a server in Germany was purchased to support a few domains that are of South African interest only. These sites were hosted in South Africa but were under such stringent limits (hard drive space, bandwidth) that the cost to upgrade our services was astronomical. So the decision was made to move the sites abroad and get better connectivity.
Compared to our old shared solution, we now have a dedicated server, tons of hard drive space and enough bandwidth to share.
I feel incredibly sad that I have to do this. Why? Because South Africa, being one of the top 3 economies in Africa, is unable to support the meagre demands of 4 pretty small sites with small budget. The machine that is currently hosting these sites could be hosting another 300 sites without a hassle but trying to do this in South Africa you would be faced with a ridiculously large bill come the end of the month.
Telkom, get your head out of your ass and allow business in South Africa to build properly into the online space. You’re wasting money, time and hurting the image of South Africa as a market that can compete with other global powers.
