What is your Point?

Warning, a little bit of a rant ahead…. ;)

What is it that causes people to become the oxygen thieves that I have started to see?  Where is your ambition?  Where is your lust for success?  Sitting in your seat, doing the absolute minimum to pass off what you call a life and convincing yourself that you do a good job is a quick way to nothing.

Start caring for your job, start being a team player, start working towards bettering yourself and your company.  When you have the opportunity and the support of others, go for it!  Otherwise please make your way to the closest  fast food outlet where your “enthusiasm” can be “utilised” to it’s full extent.

End of Rant.

You Know When

You know when your country of birth has awful internet connectivity when you start moving sites abroad.

Yes, this week a server in Germany was purchased to support a few domains that are of South African interest only.  These sites were hosted in South Africa but were under such stringent limits (hard drive space, bandwidth) that the cost to upgrade our services was astronomical.  So the decision was made to move the sites abroad and get better connectivity.

Compared to our old shared solution, we now have a dedicated server, tons of hard drive space and enough bandwidth to share.

I feel incredibly sad that I have to do this. Why?  Because South Africa, being one of the top 3 economies in Africa, is unable to support the meagre demands of 4 pretty small sites with  small budget.  The machine that is currently hosting these sites could be hosting another 300 sites without a hassle  but trying to do this in South Africa you would be faced with a ridiculously large bill come the end of the month.

Telkom, get your head out of your ass and allow business in South Africa to build properly into the online space.  You’re wasting money, time and hurting the image of South Africa as a market that can compete with other global powers.

Kristopher Tate, the developer behind the photo sharing site Zooomr, has just announced that Pro accounts will receive 4GB per month transfer limits, up from 2.5GB per month.  Wow, what an increase.  This goes in hand with the free accounts that now get 100MB per month up from the 50MB per month that was the norm before.

Thanks again to the Zooomr team!  You’re doing a fantastic job.
